HOST PROGRAM – Be a Canadian Friend
Duties: A volunteer assists Newcomers to Canada learn English, by introducing them to community life and other people in the community. Showing them where they can get services or helping them arrange for services; giving them tours of major points of interest in our community; Helping them with homework and day-to-day activities; and socializing with newcomers. As a volunteer you have the opportunity to make a new friend, learn about another land, a different language and a new culture.
Commitment: Volunteers will make arrangements with newcomers and decide together how often they will see each other and what activities they will do together. A couple of hours a week is all it takes to meet a new friend.
Requirement: Volunteers have to fill out the application form and provide 3 references and to attend the orientation/training session.
CLASSROOM HELPER
Duties: Assisting in ESL/LINC class and helping learners either one-on-one or in a small group ( 2-3 students) and/or participating in other classroom activities.
Our classes are multi-level and the students come from many different countries around the world. Our goal is to provide a friendly learning environment where everybody feels welcome. Volunteers have a choice between day-time and evening classes for their volunteering.
Commitment: 2 hours per week during the day or in the evening.
Requirement: Volunteers should be fluent in English and be prepared to work with people with a language barrier. Must have good communication skills, be good listeners and genuinely like people. Please provide an up-to-date resume with 3 references and we ask each volunteer to fill out an application form.
LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS AND TRANSLATORS
SISA has a language bank of about 50 volunteers capable of interpreting / translating in over 40 different languages. The language bank has an ongoing recruitment of volunteers who speak English and another language(s). Volunteers are asked to fill out a registration form, and after that their name becomes a part of our language bank where they are called upon only when their service is needed. SISA requires all its volunteers to take the Community Interpreters Training course.
Be a BOARD MEMBER- Help keep SISA moving forward and join our board. This is a great way to make a positive contribution in the lives of others and our community.
TUTOR - Many of our newcomer families have children in the school system. In addition to all the challenges their parents are facing, these children are also struggling with school work. Our Homework Club helps these children to attain their potential in the classroom and become postive productive members of our community.
